DIY vapor rub

Both boys woke up congested this morning. Tis the season of dry air, coughs and stuffy noses. We have been able to teach our oldest child how to make an elephant trunk when he coughs (with help from one of my friends) as to not spread his germs. A cough can spread droplets up to six meters and a sneeze up to eight so it is really important to cover your mouth in your elbow  and to wash your hands frequently to prevent the spread of germs all year round but specifically during the winter when we spend so much more time indoors!

Use On Guard foaming hand soap for best results!

At the end of the day, no matter how hard we try, we cannot always avoid all germs. So in those times I have this awesome homemade vapor rub to open up the chest and sinuses and improve respiratory function and it is a strong antibacterial.

In the Science world one of the strongest studies is a randomized double blind. This study is a prospective randomized double-blind controlled trial whose aim was to investigate the clinical effects of aromatic essential oils in patients with upper respiratory tract infections. They were treated with eucalyptus, peppermint, oregano and rosemary essential oils. “Researchers found that 20 minutes after using the spray, those in the essential oil group reported a greater improvement of symptom severity compared to those in the placebo group. The symptoms measured were sore throat, hoarseness and cough.”

The results obtained from this study showed that “essential oil of the leaves of E. globulus has antimicrobial activity against gram negative bacteria (E. coli) as well as gram positive bacteria (S. aureus).”

So Check out our awesome recipe below and let us know what you think!

HOMEMADE VAPOR RUB

Serves: 30-60

¼ cup olive oil
½ cup coconut oil
¼ cup grated bees wax
20 drops peppermint essential oil

Place a saucepan with 2 inches of water over medium low heat.
Place jar in saucepan and allow oils to melt. Stir to combine.

Pour mixture into metal tins or storage containers and allow to set.

Lather and apply to chest or feet as needed to open those airways and calm down those symptoms!

Cute Kids and a Fake Tree?

We use a Fake Tree for now. It is tall and beautiful and pre-lit! All the things I look for around Christmas, Easy. The only thing we miss is the fresh tree smell. So PROBLEM SOLVED! We made these adorable diffuser ornaments with Douglas Fir and Siberian Fir. They Smell amazing and we get to personalize them every year to keep the memories alive! If you make some drop the pictures in the comments and lets see how creative you are! I can’t wait to see what you come up with!

Ingredients

1 cup Baking Soda
1/2 cup Corn Starch
3/4 cups water
15 drops Douglas Fir/Siberian Fir or Holiday Joy Essential Oil
Optional: glitter, food coloring, Puffy Paint

Instructions

Heat all ingredients, minus Essential Oil and optional items, in small sauce pan over medium heat. Stir continuously. In a few minutes it will begin to boil( If adding food coloring, add now) and then, within 5 minutes it will thicken and form a ball of dough. Remove from heat and stir in Essential Oil and perhaps some glitter.

Once cool (not longer hot at all), roll out, using extra cornstarch to prevent sticking and use cookie cutters to create ornaments. . For extra sparkle, add glitter on top when rolling out dough. You can also use stamps to put impressions into the dough, I Pressed the kids hand prints in the dough after.
Move to cookie sheet with spatula, then puncture ornament hole using a large toothpick or skewer. Decorate with puffy paint or other acrylic pain.

Allow to harden 24 hours, flipping after 12 hours.
Store extra air tight in a zip lock bag. (I suck out the air like a weirdo haha)

Essential oil Chai Snickerdoodles

I love baking! Last year my husband sent me the recipe for chai cookies. I have a bad history of being unable to follow any given recipe without giving it my own special twist! So I came up with my own very delicious spin of the chai snickerdoodles and they are AMAZING!

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, cubed
  • 2 1/2 cups flour
  • 2 tsp cream of tartar
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 drop cardamom essential oil
  • 1 drop clove Essential oil
  • 1 drop ginger essential oil
  • 1 drop cinnamon essential oil

FOR ROLLING

  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp ginger
  • 1/2 tsp cardamom
  • 1/8 tsp cloves
  • 1/8 tsp nutmeg
  1. Cook butter in a heavy saucepan over medium heat, stirring constantly until it foams, turns clear, and then turns a deep brown, about 6 minutes. Pour browned butter into a glass measuring cup and chill in the freezer until soft/solid. (You can use room temp butter as well if short on time)
  2. Whisk together flour, cream of tartar, baking soda, and salt in a medium bowl. Beat solidified brown butter and sugar in a large mixer bowl at medium speed until creamy; beat in eggs and vanilla until combined add essential oils. Reduce speed to low and gradually add flour mixture; beat just until incorporated. Cover dough and chill in the refrigerator for at least 4 hours or freezer for 1 if rushed.
  3. Preheat oven to 350°F (If cookie dough has chilled overnight, let stand at room temperature for 20 minutes before baking). Line two baking sheets with parchment paper. Combine sugar, cinnamon, ginger, cardamom, cloves, and nutmeg in a shallow bowl. Scoop 1 1/2-inch balls of dough and dredge in chai sugar twice; place two inches-ish apart on prepared baking sheets.
  4. Bake for 11 to 12 minutes, until edges and tops are set. Cool for 4 minutes on baking sheets, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely. Store in an airtight container at room temperature.

Natural wax warmer wax!?

So, now that I know that the word fragrance can have millions of cancer causing toxins I have not been using my warmers and they are sitting there begging for some love!

Totally unrelated Beef Stroganoff

I am posting tonight about an unrelated topic!

I am not looking to get into food blogging but I do have to share a myth vs fact.

Tonight I made my comfort food for dinner. It has been a long couple weeks and it is finally cold enough to enjoy some Beef Stroganoff.

The epic debate to serve with Noodles or Rice continues, but since I cooked I picked Rice.

My husband has told me time and time again that Rice is better when rinsed.

Well tonight I rinsed my rice. I will admit, he was right. It was SO much better. So much so I had to put it on my blog.

So for those who are not familiar I will post the recipe I use, and trust me RINSE your rice 😄

Beef Stroganoff

Directions

  1. If desired, partially freeze beef for easier slicing. Trim fat from meat. Thinly slice meat across the grain into bite-size strips. In a small bowl stir together sour cream and flour. Stir in water, bouillon granules, and pepper; set aside.
  2. In a large skillet cook and stir the meat, mushrooms, onion, and garlic in hot butter over medium-high heat for 5 minutes or until desired doneness. Drain off fat.
  3. Stir sour cream mixture into skillet. Cook and stir until thickened and bubbly. Cook and stir for 1 minute more.

Smell good Saturday!

It is hard to mom when you have a killer headache.

So this morning I am diffusing to kill the headache while making my house smell amazing. Don’t believe me? See the research below!

The lavender in elevation and the peppermint are the two oils that are proven to be effective in treating headaches according to these articles.

Add some lime to kill bacteria and germs in the air for our final touch!

Properties of Lime: Antibacterial, antiseptic, antiviral, restorative

Here is also a great piece of research that demonstrates the effectiveness of Aromatherapy which an individual oil break down. The conclusion being ” we can conclude that aromatherapy is natural and noninvasive gift of nature for humans. It’s not only the disease symptoms which are eradicated but the whole body is rejuvenated by the use of aroma. Aromatherapy regulates the physiological, spiritual and psychological upliftment for the new phase of life. This therapy is not only preventive but also can be used in the acute and chronic stages of disease. Pharmaceutical industries are trying for environmental friendly, alternative and natural medicine for disease associated with pathogens and metabolism. There may be a possibility of enhancing the rate of reaction and bioavailability of drugs from the use of these essential oils.”

Now that they are diffusing my headache is almost gone and I can enjoy my kids and all their antics!

I will also be sure to drink a lot of water today as I am probably dehydrated from a day of the stomach bug shared with love from my youngest. Gotta love them! Happy Saturday!
