Migraines and Essential Oils? Do they work?

Migraines are very uncomfortable and come with multiple symptoms that can be debilitating and make it difficult to function. I myself use oils for migraines and people often recommend their use so I wanted to get to the bottom of the issue, do they work?

Lavender oil is often called the Swiss army knife of oils. A research study from 2012 found that out of 47 participants 92% had improved symptoms with inhaling lavender oil for 15 minutes suggesting “The present study suggests that inhalation of lavender essential oil may be an effective and safe treatment modality in acute management of migraine headaches.”

Some Studies have found that applying a mix of eucalyptus oil and peppermint oils applied to temples and back of neck might help with relaxation and clarity of thought if you have a headache.

Migraines can be caused by stress and anxiety so also adding in some roman chamomile may be helpful in the prevention of migraines. This double blind study found that Chamomile may have clinically meaningful antidepressant activity that occurs in addition to its previously observed anxiolytic activity.”

Another major symptom of Migraines is nausea which can be combated with diffusing lemon oil or another study suggests Ginger oil and peppermint oil applied to stomach or inhaled to decrease nausea, dizziness, fatigue and headache.

There is no evidence that I found stating that essential oils would make symptoms worse or any adverse effects so give it a try!
