Blackberry season!

We took a nice family walk tonight and went “trick or treating” according to my 2 year old, for some plump juicy blackberries.  When they are fresh off the vine they do not last very long and need to be washed and properly stored.

I wanted to see if there was a way to prolong their shelf life so I started to research! Essential oils never stop amazing me.

I found this study that shows that Lemon essential oil is a great tool in killing surface bacteria, fungus and microbes on food as well as increase shelf life. Which makes sense considering people have been using citrus for centuries to preserve food.

What you Need

  • Large bowl
  • 3 cups warm water
  • 1 cup white vinegar
  • 12 drops Lemon Essential Oil
  • Delicate produce
  • Clean kitchen towel

Method

  1. Mix up the warm water, vinegar and lemon oil in the large bowl.
  2. Now add the produce and let it soak for a minute or two. You can turn the produce in the middle to let the solution reach all parts.
  3. When the time is up, place the produce to dry on a large clean kitchen towel or start eating right away!

If you are going to freeze them like me make sure they are 100% dry. Then lay them out on a cookie sheet and freeze for 3 hours before putting them in freezer bags and returning them to the freezer!

Happy summer Everyone!!

  1. Yum. They are so much bigger then the ones my hubby picked. Be very careful of poison ivy this year. I know three people right now that have it. Thankfully not us. Very interesting info on the lemon oils extending their shelf life and neutralizing them. You rock
