DIY vapor rub

Both boys woke up congested this morning. Tis the season of dry air, coughs and stuffy noses. We have been able to teach our oldest child how to make an elephant trunk when he coughs (with help from one of my friends) as to not spread his germs. A cough can spread droplets up to six meters and a sneeze up to eight so it is really important to cover your mouth in your elbow  and to wash your hands frequently to prevent the spread of germs all year round but specifically during the winter when we spend so much more time indoors!

At the end of the day, no matter how hard we try, we cannot always avoid all germs. So in those times I have this awesome homemade vapor rub to open up the chest and sinuses and improve respiratory function and it is a strong antibacterial.

In the Science world one of the strongest studies is a randomized double blind. This study is a prospective randomized double-blind controlled trial whose aim was to investigate the clinical effects of aromatic essential oils in patients with upper respiratory tract infections. They were treated with eucalyptus, peppermint, oregano and rosemary essential oils. “Researchers found that 20 minutes after using the spray, those in the essential oil group reported a greater improvement of symptom severity compared to those in the placebo group. The symptoms measured were sore throat, hoarseness and cough.”

The results obtained from this study showed that “essential oil of the leaves of E. globulus has antimicrobial activity against gram negative bacteria (E. coli) as well as gram positive bacteria (S. aureus).”

HOMEMADE VAPOR RUB
Total Time: 30 minutes
Serves: 30-60
Ingredients:

¼ cup olive oil
½ cup coconut oil
¼ cup grated bees wax
20 drops peppermint essential oil
20 drops eucalyptus essential oil
Glass jar

Directions:

Pour the olive oil, coconut oil and beeswax into a jar.
Place a saucepan with 2 inches of water over medium low heat.
Place jar in saucepan and allow oils to melt. Stir to combine.
Once combined, allow to cool slightly and add in essential oils.
Pour mixture into metal tins or storage containers and allow to set.

 

Lather and apply to chest or feet as needed to open those airways and calm down those symptoms!
