What is in your hot water?!

Bath time is the best time in our house! We play an awesome game with foam letters where you pick a letter and have to say words that are 5 letters or more starting with that letter. We have a rain cloud to learn about precipitation and we have bath crayons for our budding artist of course.

Sadly baths and bath toys are disgusting breeding ground for bacteria. So are hot tubs and swimming pools. I don’t like using chlorine or bleach and now finally there is an essential oil solution.

According to this study “The juniper EO significantly reduced the cell viability of M. intracellulare and M. gordonae at MEC, and of M. avium at 2xMEC. Microscopic analysis confirmed its inhibitory effect by revealing significant morphological changes in the cell membrane and cytoplasm of all three bacteria”

What does that mean you ask?

“Juniper EO has a great practical potential as a complementary or alternative water disinfectant in hot water systems such as baths, swimming pools, spa pools, hot tubs, or even foot baths/whirlpools.”

Those aren’t my words friends, that is good ol’ science from our dear friends and researchers found here:   Arh Hig Rada Toksikol. 2018 Mar 1;69(1):46-54. doi: 10.2478/aiht-2018-69-3085.

There needs to be more research for practical use outside the lab with measurements of bacterial growth in the real world but for now you better believe i will be cleaning my tub and bath toys with the following recipe:

  1. start with 8 oz (or larger) spray bottle
  2. add 1 cup vinegar
  3. add 20 drops Juniper Berry essential oil and 40 drops tea tree essential oil
  4. Fill remainder with water
  5. put on spray top and shake well to mix
  6. Spray in bath, on toys, slip and slide or outdoor pool for a good cleaning.
  7. Beware of potential plastic break down. 🙂
