Migraines and Essential Oils? Do they work?

Migraines are very uncomfortable and come with multiple symptoms that can be debilitating and make it difficult to function. I myself use oils for migraines and people often recommend their use so I wanted to get to the bottom of the issue, do they work?

Lavender oil is often called the Swiss army knife of oils. A research study from 2012 found that out of 47 participants 92% had improved symptoms with inhaling lavender oil for 15 minutes suggesting “The present study suggests that inhalation of lavender essential oil may be an effective and safe treatment modality in acute management of migraine headaches.”

Some Studies have found that applying a mix of eucalyptus oil and peppermint oils applied to temples and back of neck might help with relaxation and clarity of thought if you have a headache.

Migraines can be caused by stress and anxiety so also adding in some roman chamomile may be helpful in the prevention of migraines. This double blind study found that Chamomile may have clinically meaningful antidepressant activity that occurs in addition to its previously observed anxiolytic activity.”

Another major symptom of Migraines is nausea which can be combated with diffusing lemon oil or another study suggests Ginger oil and peppermint oil applied to stomach or inhaled to decrease nausea, dizziness, fatigue and headache.

There is no evidence that I found stating that essential oils would make symptoms worse or any adverse effects so give it a try!

Bruise Be Gone

Good Morning!

My children have been extra needy these last few weeks, demanding to be held. Which I totally do not mind because they are pretty cute! Add in some yard work and the fact that I have been using my arms a little extra at work the last few weeks and I am left with a sore shoulder.

Luckily I have all the tools in my arsenal to help! I did some cupping. Michael Phelps was the one who made the technique famous but it has been used in eastern medicine for ages! This article  has some compelling evidence that cupping may be beneficial for pain control and improved quality of life. The down side is it leaves some nasty bruising.

Luckily for me I have OILS!

2013 review found helichrysum to have anti-hematomal properties. If quickly applied, the essential oil can reduce bruise size and appearance as well as decrease inflammation.

Apply diluted oil to unbroken skin immediately after injury or massage. Reapply as necessary for pain relief.

I took this one further and Checked my Modern Essentials book for other great oils to help!

I came up with this blend.

I mixed it with Vitamin E oil because that is what I have on hand. FCO, jojoba or grape seed oil would work well too.

Hope you have good luck with those bruises.

Motivation

Why don’t we just run through all of the emotions blends! I LOVE motivate. I have the roller and I mix it with Jasmine Absolute which is one of my top 5 favorite oils. I have been obsessed with Jasmine since college. I love to drink Jasmine Tea, Smell like jasmine, and I have even attempted growing it. If you know me at all you know I have the super power to kill ANY plant no matter how hard I try to keep them alive.

I use this blend in the form of a roller, but be cautious as motivate contains citrus oils that may cause skin sensitivity in the sun.

This blend mixed with elevation is a great blend for the diffuser to keep things uplifted and stimulating! This article shows that peppermint significantly increases walking speed and distance in mice suggesting increased behavioral activity when diffused.  Also as a fun side note this article shows Peppermint oil targets headache pathophysiology in multiple ways and now is LICENSED for treatment at a 10% dilution for people with tension headaches. Motivate contains peppermint and the extra dash just sends it over the edge for a great way to decrease tension and increase activity!

Pain Relief

Pain?

Who has Low back pain? I DO! After carrying around my sweet boys all day, doing the laundry, yard work and other house hold tasks my back is pretty toast! I am also a Physical Therapist Assistant during the day, I do all of my exercises (and you should too!) but the pain still lingers.

Based on this randomized clinical trial the use of Ginger Essential Oil with massage was an effective treatment for low back pain and should be considered by medical professionals!

I tried it out and was very impressed with the results. It is not a long term answer but it defiantly cut the pain!

Copaiba under the tongue: I was skeptical about internal use but OH MY GOODNESS this works amazing! Check out this Breakdown of the science here.

Also HERE: It is suggested that the naturally occurring sesquiterpenes present in the copaiba oils seem to be responsible for the anti inflammatory response.

Copaiba Essential Oil is most exciting as it’s an extremely versatile oil and there are many ways to incorporate it into your life…

1 – Most of the body can benefit from Copaiba—it supports the cardiovascular, immune, digestive, nervous, and immune system. To take advantage of these benefits for any of these systems, add one to two drops to water, juice, or make your own tea by using warm water and honey.

2 – Copaiba blends well with Roman Chamomile, Cedarwood, Sandalwood, Frankincense, or Ylang Ylang. Use any of these oils that appeal to you and create your own personal fragrance in a roller bottle. (Fill the rest of the bottle with Fractionated Coconut Oil.)

3 – Keep your skin clear and clean while reducing the appearance of blemishes by adding Copaiba to your toner or by applying it directly to skin before applying moisturizer.

4 – When you’re facing a stressful day ahead or feeling worried, diffusing Copaiba’s woody scent can help calm any anxious feelings you may be experiencing.

5 – Take one to two drops in a veggie capsule to take advantage of the antioxidants—the substance that stops potential damage to your cells from oxidation.

What will be the first way you use your Copaiba essential oil?
