Metabolism and Essential Oils? Can it really help?!

The life long search for that secret weight loss tip. The endless days of calorie counting, awkwardly staring in the mirror wishing for something different, avoiding foods you love and doing hours of exercises you hate…. Sound familiar? What if I told you all the angst and anxiety that goes behind weight loss is actually making it worse?

Cortisol is a hormone that is released with stress and anxiety. According to this case study “Stress can be either a triggering or aggravating factor for many diseases and pathological conditions.” ” stress can affect appetite and stress adversely affects the normal function of GI tract.” If you continue to read the article it will demonstrate the downfall of stress on memory, brain function, cardiovascular function, GI function and Immune system.

To address the focus on Metabolism there has been a few studies conducted about aromatically (inhaling, sniffing or diffusing) Essential oils  wild orange, lavender, sandalwood and clary sage decreases anxiety and stress which in turn improves gut bacteria and  “A significant alteration of metabolic profile in subjects responsive to essential oil was found”

Studies have also  report that bergamot reduces the production of cortisol, which has also been linked to the inability to drop stubborn belly fat.

Slim and Sassy the metabolic blend by Doterra is made up of Grapefruit, Lemon, Peppermint, Ginger and Cinnamon.

Grapefruit used 3x a week for 15 minutes inhaled, ingested or used topically was sown to reduce urge to eat.

Peppermint inhaled can decrease calorie intake over normal intake. “Decrease appetite, hunger cravings, decreased calories which in turn leads to weight loss and healthier life style”

Peppermint has also been shown to improve exercise performance “The results of the experiment support the effectiveness of peppermint essential oil on the exercise performance”

Ginger has been shown to help with many areas of digestive health such as anti nausea, preventative for colon cancer, and also appears to reduce cholesterol and improve lipid metabolism, thereby helping to decrease the risk of cardiovascular disease and diabetes.

Lemon EO is a natural stress reliever. “Inhaling lemon EO causes anti-stress effects, Lemon EO showed cytotoxic effects against human prostate, lung, and breast cancer cells. Lemon EO causes activation of the sympathetic nerve activity innervating the white adipose tissue (WAT), which increases lipolysis and results in the suppression of body weight gain. Lemon EO significantly enhanced attention level, concentration, cognitive performance, mood, and memory of students during the learning process.”

So, Are you convinced that essential oils can help you on your anti anxiety weight loss journey with A lot of extra side benefits? I absolutely am!

To make it even more effective you can try the awesome High intensity interval training (HIIT) which has been shown to be one of the most effective workout styles to boost metabolism and “Perhaps equally important to maximal aerobic capacity adaptations are the dramatic acute and chronic effects HITT has on improving insulin sensitivity. The effects of HIIT on visceral fat and subcutaneous fat loss are encouraging. And, the impact of HIIT has on reducing blood pressure (when elevated) and improving HDL cholesterol is promising. The evidence is in, and it appears that HIIT is a metabolic health effects winner!”

So Go ahead and give it a try, the evidence is overwhelming. I am so excited to get fit, stay healthy and spend more time cherishing the precious moments with my loved ones. No more stress fat for me!

Eucalyptus Essential OIl Shower Melt DIY

I hope making these will make your cold season a little better. There has been a lot of controversy about using Eucalyptus with children under 6. I myself was a little cautious at first. I will give you some science of course. But I will also inform you that I have now 3 times seen organic eucalyptus roller balls in the baby aisle of target, Fred Meyers and whole foods labeled to help with infant congestion. I thought to myself, If it is so dangerous for children how on earth would they be approved to sell and market it directly to parents of infants. So I decided it was time to weed out the garbage and get some more solid evidence.

Max Helping Mommy DIY

Eucalyptus is a natural expectorant that can help unclog respiratory congestion. This makes Eucalyptus a favorite during the cold winter months.

Eucalpytus radiata is a different species than the commonly found Eucalyptus globulus. Children and infants should use Eucalyptus Radiata which is the species produced by Doterra While Eucalyptus globulus is safe for adults, it should not be used on children under the age of 2.

The essential oil safety guidelines state that “The cineole present in eucalyptus oil can create nervous and breathing related problems in children. That said, some distilled versions of eucalyptus oil contain lower amounts of cineole.”

Make sure children and babies do not ingest eucalyptus oil intentionally or accidentally. The side effects might be more severe if the family has a history of respiratory problems such as asthma.

The scientific review of eucalyptus injuries and side effects in children were with ingesting 3-5ml of the essential oil. That is ALOT of essential oil and would never be recommended to ingest that much of ANY essential oil.  Read the full reviewed info in this Pub Med article .

I use Eucalyptus Essential oil Diffused only for my kiddos but If you are not comfortable using eucalyptus that is OK! You can always use Frankincense, Lime and cardamom to help open airways, improve congestion, cough, cold, and sore throats.

DIY vapor rub

Both boys woke up congested this morning. Tis the season of dry air, coughs and stuffy noses. We have been able to teach our oldest child how to make an elephant trunk when he coughs (with help from one of my friends) as to not spread his germs. A cough can spread droplets up to six meters and a sneeze up to eight so it is really important to cover your mouth in your elbow  and to wash your hands frequently to prevent the spread of germs all year round but specifically during the winter when we spend so much more time indoors!

Use On Guard foaming hand soap for best results!

At the end of the day, no matter how hard we try, we cannot always avoid all germs. So in those times I have this awesome homemade vapor rub to open up the chest and sinuses and improve respiratory function and it is a strong antibacterial.

In the Science world one of the strongest studies is a randomized double blind. This study is a prospective randomized double-blind controlled trial whose aim was to investigate the clinical effects of aromatic essential oils in patients with upper respiratory tract infections. They were treated with eucalyptus, peppermint, oregano and rosemary essential oils. “Researchers found that 20 minutes after using the spray, those in the essential oil group reported a greater improvement of symptom severity compared to those in the placebo group. The symptoms measured were sore throat, hoarseness and cough.”

The results obtained from this study showed that “essential oil of the leaves of E. globulus has antimicrobial activity against gram negative bacteria (E. coli) as well as gram positive bacteria (S. aureus).”

So Check out our awesome recipe below and let us know what you think!

Wild Orange and Fall Evenings

It Is Saturday Night at the end of September. The kids and I played outside, chased leaves, baked cookies and are settling down for the evening. This diffuser blend hits the spot while helping us all calm down for the night as well as boost our immune systems, purify the air and balance our emotions.

One study found a direct connection between frankincense oil’s ability to eradicate bodily inflammation and enhanced immune system function.

This Study results indicate that inhalation of orange essential oil effectively induces relaxation in humans.

And then there is Lavender oil, The Swiss army knife of oils: Lavender is a universal oil that has traditionally been known to balance the body and to work wherever there is a need. If in doubt, use lavender.  See my other Lavender posts for more information!

Enjoy your cozy night!

Ginger

GINGER OIL:

The cold and Flu season has begun 🙁 We have been having some tummy aches around our house and we turned to Ginger! This article is a great two-sided piece that questions the safety and effectiveness of Ginger as well as demonstrates the researched based support for Ginger as an anti inflammatory, anti-nausea and antioxidant.

We have ginger in a 10ml roller diluted in FCO. We rub it in a circle on the tummy that is upset and rub it in gently.  Along Few hugs and snotty kisses and some rest the family is on the mend!

Feeling Gross!

IT HAPPENED! My 9 month old was crawling around on the floor at the doctor and the next day he was sick! We used his open airways blend (Cardamom, Frankincense and FCO) and diffused breathe, but on Sunday he secured my fate by sneezing his green snot all over my eyes and mouth! I really hate calling in sick because in my line of work there are more people affected then just me.

Menthol containing Essential oils are starting to have some supporting research showing they have a positive effect with inhalation on “mucus clearance in chronic airways obstruction.”

Menthol containing Essential oils are : Peppermint, Eucalyptus, Breathe, Deep blue and spearmint!

So for today’s post I will outline what I did to make myself functional and feeling better in 3 days!

Breathe Vapor rub stick on the chest and feet to open my airways!

On guard throat drops: AMAZING!

On Guard beadlets

Diffuse on Guard and breathe with serenity

Apply motivate and cheer in the morning and as needed through the day

Drink Starbucks citrus defenders and Lime water with raspberries

Use Elderberry drops (Thanks to my colleague Becky!)

And Lastly the use of my home made eucalyptus shower melts!

Here is the recipe!

To make your own shower melts you will need:

1 1/2 cups cornstarch
20 drops Breathe essential oil
20 drops eucalyptus essential oil
1 Tablespoon Witch Hazel (optional)
Food Coloring (optional)- DID NOT USE!
Water – 3 to 4 tablespoons to start, more will likely be needed
ice cube tray or silicone molds
medium size bowl
mixing spoon

Step #1 – Add your cornstarch, essential oils, witch hazel and food coloring to medium sized mixing bowl. Stir. It will be very powdery and clumpy.

Step #2 – Add water, starting with 3 Tablespoons. Mix well… it will start as a dry, crumbly mixture. Add water a few drops at a time and mix well. Then a few more drops and mix some more. Repeat until you get JUST past the crumbly point and the color is mixed in. If the mixture gets too wet, add a little more cornstarch.

Step #3 – Spoon the paste into the ice cube tray or silicone mold. Gently tap / shake to work out the bubbles. Freeze for at least 1 hour.

DIY Hand Soap!

Good Morning Everyone!

We used up all our hand soap because Toddler life is a messy life! So this morning we made more! It is summer so I wanted to avoid citrus oils due to their photo sensitivity. I also wanted something that would keep us calm and but still slightly stimulating.

Tea Tree is an oil we have not talked a lot about yet. It is one of the most popular oils and most recognized by medical professionals as it has a lot of research to back it up! It is well-known for its powerful antiseptic properties and ability to treat wounds, which is why it’s one of the top antibacterial oils. It has also been shown to be effective against other antibiotic resistant infections. Super cool! It does many other things as well. Check the Tea tree or Melaleuca Tag for more posts about this awesome oil!  Have fun with your DIY!
