Totally unrelated Beef Stroganoff

I am posting tonight about an unrelated topic!

I am not looking to get into food blogging but I do have to share a myth vs fact.

Tonight I made my comfort food for dinner. It has been a long couple weeks and it is finally cold enough to enjoy some Beef Stroganoff.

The epic debate to serve with Noodles or Rice continues, but since I cooked I picked Rice.

My husband has told me time and time again that Rice is better when rinsed.

Well tonight I rinsed my rice. I will admit, he was right. It was SO much better. So much so I had to put it on my blog.

So for those who are not familiar I will post the recipe I use, and trust me RINSE your rice 😄

Beef Stroganoff

  1. If desired, partially freeze beef for easier slicing. Trim fat from meat. Thinly slice meat across the grain into bite-size strips. In a small bowl stir together sour cream and flour. Stir in water, bouillon granules, and pepper; set aside.
  2. In a large skillet cook and stir the meat, mushrooms, onion, and garlic in hot butter over medium-high heat for 5 minutes or until desired doneness. Drain off fat.
  3. Stir sour cream mixture into skillet. Cook and stir until thickened and bubbly. Cook and stir for 1 minute more.

Germs are in the Air

Happy Fall everyone! Before kids, this was my favorite time of year! Strolling around outdoors in the brisk air and the sun shining through the color changing leaves. Drinking a warm beverage while reading a book by fire light. Fashionable clothing choices that cover all my lumps and bumps (One of my favorite parts) while enjoying the fall festivities such as pumpkin patches and harvest festivals.

Then Came Children….

The germ factories, evidence of snotty noses on the shoulder of my shirt, the back of the couch or the coffee table. Coughing on the counter, toys and in my face. Vomit EVERYWHERE! So back to the research I go. We have had illness after illness in our home and I start to second guess myself.

I went back to the database and started coming through mountains of truths, partial truths and flat out lies about my new love of essential oils. Testimonials not supported, I am glad the worked for you, but what about everyone else? Testimonials about the danger and ineffectiveness of oils, I am going to need to see your research too! Half-Truths about in vitro studies on cells in a lab, what about the use in REAL LIFE?

The Truth of the matter is, oils are still new! Natural health has been used since the beginning of time, but only since late 80’s have they really been looked at and researched for their true effectiveness vs the old wives tale.

Yes, I know they work, but I want to know WHY and HOW and WHEN, and so do hospitals, schools and skeptics. First rule of medicine, DO NO HARM! So even though we know they work in certain circumstances, there is still a lot we don’t know. Unfortunately, we live in a litigious society. Make one false claim or one well meaning mistake and life as you know it is over.  So, it is our job as oil lovers to be non biased. Look at  the research, check our sources, advocate for better research  studies on humans, while still doing what is best for our families.

People are so ready to cut down on oils and call out all their risks. Do not be BLIND, the risks and side effects and dangers of synthetic products are PROVEN to be dangerous. They do not have to disclose their full ingredients, processes or research. They do NOT have to be shown effective or safe, yet people still use them. The power of big marketing, politics and money is very strong.

Check out a couple of these wonderful articles about hidden toxic ingredients, the term “fragrance”, flaws in FDA regulation,

The Franklin Institute did a great non biased breakdown of essential oil use in schools. They have how not to and how to use them safely with the current research as well as understanding that there is research lacking and what needs to be studied in the future.

From the Franklin Institute article :

“Essential oils do not have to be excluded from the classroom entirely. When used appropriately, there are many useful applications of essential oils in the classroom which meet the criteria of efficacy, safety, and ethical practice. Some of these applications include:

  • Cleaning Products: Essential oils can be used as alternatives to harsh bleaches and other potentially harmful cleaning products. For this application, follow usual guidelines for cleaning products. For example, use these items when children are out of the classroom, ensure ample ventilation, and store the products away from children.
  • Air Fresheners: Under the guidance of a professional aromatherapist, essential oils can be used as alternatives to plug-in air fresheners and floral bouquets to address foul odors in the air. This application would exclude large doses and medicinal intent.
  • Personal inhalers. Just as a parent may send a dietary supplement or topical herbal product to school with permission for administration or self-administration, children may opt to use personal inhalers for benefits which do not affect his or her classmates. A professional aromatherapist can develop and formulate products for individual use. Environmental health. Hand sanitizers and other personal care products may also be used”

I really like that this study shows a practical use of oils and how they are effective in killing the flu virus in HVAC systems!

Try this Recipe for cleaning!

  • 8 oz or 16 oz Glass Spray Bottle
  • ½ cup water
  • 8 drops of Eucalyptus
  • 8 drops of Tea Tree
  • 5 drops of Lemon

Combine water and essential oils in glass container. Shake vigorously before use. Spray on carpet, furniture and in the air. Do not spray on skin.

Here is a systematic compilation of effectiveness of essential oils for cleaning. “Essential oils contain a wide variety of secondary metabolites that are capable of inhibiting or slowing the growth of bacteria, yeasts and molds. Essential oils and their components have activity against a variety of targets, particularly the membrane and cytoplasm, and in some cases, they completely change the morphology of the cells”

The research needs to be more thorough but I am convinced that Essential oils are the most safe and effective option for keeping our house hold clean and healthy.  Have questions? Ask me! There is a lot of evidence that is not included for pure fact that it is boring and overwhelming! But I have more if you need it!

I am also CONVINCED that DoTerra’s Quality and purity are Top Notch as well as their Co impact sourcing to give back to the communities the oils are harvested from.

Lastly, please please make sure that no matter what brand of essential oils you are using they are PURE!!!! According to the university of Minnesota these are the qualities to look for.

Some important considerations

  1. Is the Latin name of the plant provided so that you are sure you are getting the right essential oil? For example, there are several species of lavender.
  2. Is the name of the country in which the plants were grown provided? A consumer would not be expected to differentiate oils from different countries, but this information is important to aromatherapists because quality can vary by country. This is an indication that the company is marketing to knowledgeable parties as well as general consumers.
  3. Is there a statement about purity? You should be informed if it is not 100% essential oil (meaning, it has been altered or mixed with something else).
  4. Is the cost comparable in comparison with other brands of the same essential oil? If it’s really cheap, it probably isn’t the real thing.
  5. Does it smell as you expect it to smell?
  6. Is there information about organic growing or wildcrafting (gathering wild plants)? Most essential oils sold in the U.S. are not certified as to their organic status, but some European brands are.”

Good Morning

Just something that Smells AMAZING to celebrate my Little guy turning 3 TODAY! Oh my, all the feels. Happy Birthday Luke!

Baby kit!

My little boys are my sweet babies. I have made it my life goal to protect them and give them a great start in life. I know I cannot protect them forever but I can teach them how to protect themselves. I can give them the tools to make healthy choices in hopes that one day they will continue to care for themselves.

One of the main reasons I went crazy for oils was to cut out synthetics and build a healthier home.

I just recieved the new Doterra baby kit that contains diaper cream (rumor is that it makes an amazing SPF 60 too), a shampoo/body wash and lotion.

I will be honest, the first time I opened the lotion the smell threw me. I was not a fan. However, husband did the first bath time using the shampoo and lotion and when i smelled my baby he smelled heavenly.

I have fallen in love with their baby line. I also know that every time i smell the lotion now I am immediately taken back to when my husband brought down my smiling boy for his nighttime snuggles. I hope that is something I never forget.

There is mass research that links smell to memeory and I can only hope that in 60 years I will get a whiff of lavender and chamomile and remember my sweet boys splashing in the tub, the smiles and laughs, the bed time stories and heart felt conversation and those big sloppy kisses as my 2.5 year old confesses to me that he “loved me all day”.

I know that using all natural soaps and lotions are protecting my family from toxins and potential risk. I know that when I get those whiffs in the future I did my best.

Calm doggy

Yesterday was independence day, the day of fireworks, outdoors, picnics and alcohol to celebrate Americas birthday! Unfortunately the animals do not enjoy the day as much as the humans.

There are more dogs lost on the 4th of July than any OTHER DAY of the year!

In years past we have used Rescue Remedy a natural calming solution that we put in our dogs water. Follow the link to see it on amazon. It is pretty effective but also expensive. This year we used the calm pets blend.

Diffuse or spray for calm anxiety free fur babies

I diffused it in the house but it was a little too effective and everyone at home was REAL calm and tired including myself. I turned of the diffusers while we were home and resumed them when we left.

While we were home I ended up mixing water and 2-3 drops of Cedarwood, Vetiver and Lavender mixed with water in a small spray bottle and sprayed their dog beds and their fur. They were calm and relaxed for the rest of the day.

Hopefully the fireworks are over, but go ahead and mix up this blend for your fur babies that have separation anxiety or are just a little neurotic all year long!

What is in your hot water?!

Bath time is the best time in our house! We play an awesome game with foam letters where you pick a letter and have to say words that are 5 letters or more starting with that letter. We have a rain cloud to learn about precipitation and we have bath crayons for our budding artist of course.

Sadly baths and bath toys are disgusting breeding ground for bacteria. So are hot tubs and swimming pools. I don’t like using chlorine or bleach and now finally there is an essential oil solution.

According to this study “The juniper EO significantly reduced the cell viability of M. intracellulare and M. gordonae at MEC, and of M. avium at 2xMEC. Microscopic analysis confirmed its inhibitory effect by revealing significant morphological changes in the cell membrane and cytoplasm of all three bacteria”

What does that mean you ask?

“Juniper EO has a great practical potential as a complementary or alternative water disinfectant in hot water systems such as baths, swimming pools, spa pools, hot tubs, or even foot baths/whirlpools.”

Those aren’t my words friends, that is good ol’ science from our dear friends and researchers found here:   Arh Hig Rada Toksikol. 2018 Mar 1;69(1):46-54. doi: 10.2478/aiht-2018-69-3085.

There needs to be more research for practical use outside the lab with measurements of bacterial growth in the real world but for now you better believe i will be cleaning my tub and bath toys with the following recipe:

  1. start with 8 oz (or larger) spray bottle
  2. add 1 cup vinegar
  3. add 20 drops Juniper Berry essential oil and 40 drops tea tree essential oil
  4. Fill remainder with water
  5. put on spray top and shake well to mix
  6. Spray in bath, on toys, slip and slide or outdoor pool for a good cleaning.
  7. Beware of potential plastic break down. 🙂
